Join the bellydance contest!
Before entering the competion, you may have a few questions. We will try to answer them.
First of all: why should I compete?
Exposure: Especially when you are a new and unknown but promising performer, Belly dance competitions are a great way to put yourself – or your studio - ‘out there’. Furthermore your name and picture will appear on our website and on social media, whether you win a price or not.
Networking: Competitions are not only a great way to make new friends from all parts of the world but also to meet people who might take your career a little step further by offering you opportunities to perform (and teach) elsewhere.
Personal Development: the whole process of preparation is an excellent opportunity way to challenge yourself and enhance your skills by setting personal dance-goals.
Excitement: It takes courage and bravery to stand before the judges and give it your best shot. Everyone who has the nerve to do that should be very proud of themselves.
Criticism: You receive constructive criticism from a cross-section of established dancers, which may alert you to your blind spots and aspects of your performance you need to work on.
You can register for one of the following categories:
With folklore we mean Arab folk dance. These include dance style like saïdi, eskanderia/melaya leff, debke, tanoura, ghawazee, fallahi, zaar, khaleegy, etc. These dances are less popular than bellydance, but can be very attractive to look at if performed skillfully and with expression.
Bellydance is based on the classic style Raqs Sharqi. Allowed are classical oriental, (Turkish) floor dance, taqseem and drumsolo classical style, Baladi and dans routines including show folkloric pieces also fall into this category.
Fusion is oriental technique mixed with other dance styles, like Spanish/Flamenco, Rumba, Tango, Jazz, modern dance, African dance, Samba, Bollywood, acrobatic dance. Tribal fusion and American Tribal Style belongs to this category as well.
In this interesting article Isis Zahara tells more about these different dance styles.
Off course your performance should meet the category you signed up four. The judges will also judge your performance according to "TCI", which stands for Technique, Composition and Image. In the semi finals and finals 'Show' is added as 4th criterion.
In our blogposts we have elaborated on these criteria.
Who are the judges?
